For centuries wool has been the preferred material for use in saddle pads for horses that work for a living.  It is only in the last couple of decades that man has tried to come up with something better by using synthetic materials. Nylon fleece, petroleum based foams, Gel packs, tacky rubber, etc have all been tried and found wanting. NOTHING will protect your horse better than 100% real wool!

There are many reasons for using real 100% wool pads:

  • Wool is an environmentally friendly renewable resource - sheep grow a new wool coat every year!
  • It takes minimal energy to produce wool felt - It takes a lot of energy and petroleum products to produce foam and fake fleece pads.
  • Synthetic fleece pads trap heat and sweat next to the body - If you wouldn't wear that stuff for underpants or socks why put it on your horse?
  • 100% wool wicks moisture and heat away from the body - studies on saddle pads have shown 100% wool pads are 3-5 degrees cooler than any synthetic pad.
  • Synthetic fleece and foam pads provide marginal protection - Pinch pads with thumb and fingers,if you can feel the other finger it likely has bad compression protection!
  • 100% wool protects your horse back and spreads the load evenly and will not easily compress.

We developed these pads for use on our own driving horses when we discovered that the commonly available synthetic pads were causing pressure points and sore spots on the horses back. With these 100% Wool Pads the problems went away!

We make these pads in our own shop from american made products. Stitching is heavy harness thread. Each pad has four genuine 1" wide Heavy Duty Velcro brand straps for securing to your saddle. Velcro is black on all pads.

The felt only comes in a natural white and you can dye it any color you desire by using commonly available RIT fabric dye.

Felt Care Instructions

  • To keep your Wool Pads in good condition brush off any loose dirt, hair and salt from the sweat after the pad has dried.
  • A good hose down now and then will take out most of the dirt.
  • A soak in HOT soapy water will take out the grease build-up that can accumulate after a while. You will need to do this only a few times a year (depending on how much driving you do)
  • Fill a tub with VERY HOT water and liquid laundry detergent.Adding some washing soda will help to dissolve grease and dirt.
  • GENTLY lower the pad down into the water, do not move the pad around as this will cause the pad to shrink.
  • Allow the pad to soak for 15 - 20 minutes or so (if left to get cold the grease will settle back into the pad and solidify, (making it hard again).
  • GENTLY move the pad around a bit at the end of the soak to push the grease out of the blanket but avoid any vigorous action, which will cause shrinking.
  • You may use the spin cycle of your washing machine. Spinning will not cause felting ----agitation will.
  • Rinse the pad by repeating steps 1 to 5 without the soap.
  • Adding a little vinegar to the rinse water helps to restore the natural PH of the fibre and release all the detergent
  • Hang outdoors in a shady well ventilated spot to air dry. DO NOT dry in clothes dryer as it will shrink and deform the pad!
